The Last Turf Church in Island

As you may know, Iceland is not famous for its forests. Most of its territory is covered with moss and dwarf plants. Thus, the turf is often used as a building material.

In the last century, there were many houses covered with turf in Island. Now their number is decreasing constantly. The church in the small village of Hof is one of the last that remained on the island. If to count only the functioning ones, then this one is definitely the last one. This construction technology was used since the Iron Age. The main purpose of it was to protect from the harsh climate of the island.
